Editorial Imagery Research

The article I chose is called “Overcoming Dyslexia” and it is by Betsy Morris. This article was in Fortune magazine and it is about important people who have dyslexia. It talks about who they are today and also what they went through as a child when they were learning to read and write. Some of them didn’t finish school and others were held back. But, all of them were able to make a name for themselves because they were able to excel in other things. Most dyslexic people are able to think outside the box and can problem solve a lot faster and easier than most people.  These people are Richard Branson who developed Virgin Records and Virgin Atlantic Airways, Charles Schwab who created the discount brokerage business, John Chambers who is the CEO of Cisco, and David Boies who is a trial attorney best known for beating Microsoft.  An Interesting quote from this article is,” Stupid. Dumb. Retard. Dyslexic kids have heard it all. According to a March 2000 Roper poll, almost two-thirds of Americans still associate learning disabilities with mental retardation.” They elaborate more on this and explain why that 2/3 of people are wrong, “It is a disability in learning. It is not an intelligence disability. It doesn't mean you can't think."
I thought Charles Schwab was interesting because he learned to read by comic books because the pictures gave him clues to what he was reading. I am thinking about using that kind of layout for this project. I will take a picture of a book or someone reading a book and I will build the template for the comic in Illustrator.
